Positions of Responsibility (PORs) are a cornerstone of higher advancement in Scouting. It is through these positions that demand leadership above and beyond the role of a normal scout, that the scouts advance not only in rank but in personal maturity.

Positions of Responsibility include Senior Patrol Leader, Staff Patrol assignments (e.g. ASPL, Troop Quartermaster, Troop Scribe, OA Rep., etc.), Patrol Leader, and Den Chief.

There are other PORs that are less demanding of the scouts and do not qualify as the needed leadership position for rank advancement. They are, however, still integral to the success of the patrols and are stepping stones for later advancement to the higher PORs. They are: Assistant Patrol Leader, "Third Man", Patrol Quartermaster, and Patrol Scribe.
